More Than a Year into the Pandemic, Our Commitments Remain Strong

Much of the world is still struggling with the health and economic implications of COVID-19. While the future trajectory of the pandemic is uncertain, we know many countries will remain in need of assistance for some time. Even in countries where widespread vaccine distribution has made possible some degree of reopening, many individuals and communities are still navigating the negative fallout of the pandemic.

From the start of this crisis, American Tower made three commitments. First, we would prioritize the health and safety of our employees. Second, as our lives moved online, we would support the tremendous network coverage and capacity needs of citizens on six continents. Finally, we determined that corporate responsibility would be at the heart of our response, and that we would use our resources to help communities in need. More than a year later, these commitments are unchanged.

Keeping Our People Safe

With the different levels of crisis across the globe, we remain vigilant in our efforts to keep our people safe. We listen to our people in different corners of the globe to understand the support they need. We also seek their on-the-ground guidance as to how we can make a difference in the communities where we operate, many of which are still coping with the pandemic.

Delivering Connectivity

Appreciation of the vital role of reliable telecommunications connectivity has only grown over the past year, and we have strengthened our ability to deliver it. Through organic growth and acquisitions over the past year, our global network now includes more than 214,000 towers in 24 countries, enabling the connectivity that supports the industrial sector, telehealth, remote education, and a range of Internet-enabled services. We know that through effective partnerships, we can leverage our infrastructure for even greater good.

Giving Back

As we move forward with hope, we will continue to give back, as we have done throughout this difficult journey. In 2020, the American Tower Foundation contributed $2 million toward COVID-19 relief efforts, both here at home and globally. We also supported three organizations – the CDC Foundation, Direct Relief, and Feeding America – through a special employee match campaign.

In 2021, to do our part to help address the ongoing needs in some parts of the world, American Tower CEO Tom Bartlett joined the Global Task Force on Pandemic Response, a unified platform for businesses to mobilize and deliver resources. With leadership from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and support from Business Roundtable, the Task Force was launched in May 2021 to support COVID-19 response amid rising case counts in India and around the globe.

To contribute to India’s response effort, our American Tower India team acquired $350,000 worth of oxygen concentrators from Philips. The American Tower Foundation is donating $150,000 to the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed by The Apollo Hospitals Group in India, to purchase oxygen concentrators, ventilators, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (“ECMO”) machines. The American Tower Foundation also recently made a $134,000 contribution to The Akshaya Patra Foundation in India for the procurement and distribution of 6,600 mini kits (oximeters and digital thermometers).

Building on our global giving campaign last year, American Tower has announced a four-month 2:1 employee match program to direct funds to charitable organizations best positioned to provide relief on the ground in India and around the world, including American India Foundation, Americares Foundation, and Give2Asia.

As we move forward in this current chapter of the pandemic, American Tower will continue to keep our people safe, facilitate the connectivity that brings us together and give back to those in need. Together, we will work toward a brighter tomorrow.
