Our Role in Sports,
Entertainment, and Gaming

With increasing bandwidth demands and guest expectations of reliable wireless service, sports, entertainment, and gaming venue owners look to infrastructure providers who can meet their specific coverage, capacity, and performance needs.

American Tower designs and deploys customized, creative network solutions, including Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), Wi-Fi, private networks, and edge computing, that ensure seamless and dependable wireless connectivity throughout the venue. Our neutral-host approach allows us to scale our solutions to support multiple Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and cater to property-specific requirements. We simplify the entire process of implementing wireless connectivity solutions, saving you time and allowing you to focus on your guests’ experiences.

Featured Customer: United Center

The United Center, home to the National Hockey League’s (NHL’s) Chicago Blackhawks and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA’s) Chicago Bulls, is the second busiest arena in the U.S., hosting more than 200 events each year. American Tower deployed the initial DAS network in 2013, enabling reliable wireless communications throughout the venue. The system was recently upgraded to 5G, providing guests with a premium wireless experience.

United Center’s Challenges

The United Center’s size, event-specific floor layouts, space and aesthetic requirements, and robust schedule influenced this project. The oval-shaped tiered seating required a unique network design to avoid Radio Frequency (RF) signal interference. Coordinating the installation of over 20 miles of cable and hundreds of antennas, without disrupting the fan experience added complexity to the network construction.

Hear From Our Customer

“We worked closely with American Tower’s team to identify where cellular antennas would be installed in order to maintain building standards and aesthetics. We also reviewed the various features and how different technologies could be deployed. They listened to us and delivered on our unique wireless connectivity requirements.”

Our Solutions for the United Center

Signal Interference Mitigation

Installing a DAS in the arena was complicated, given its bowl shape. Antennas and aggregation points had to be strategically deployed to provide coverage, without creating interference, including antennas in the ceiling and cabling in the concrete flooring.

Unique Shroud Development

Without much room for DAS equipment in the arena, we installed small antennas on the handrails and hired a special fabricator to develop shrouds small enough to fit within them.

Venue Aesthetics Integration

Network equipment shouldn’t detract from the overall aesthetic of a venue. Thus, antennas and cabling were disguised and painted red to match the colors of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

Dynamic Seating Adjustments

The United Center hosts many kinds of events and has different seating configurations for each. We ensure our DAS provides consistent coverage, adjusting it for each seating scenario and making changes discreetly, so patrons are not inconvenienced.
